Ikea launches augmented reality app to let you virtually furnish a room Aug 5th 2013, 18:58
Ikea offers a wide range of furniture for the home, and you have the option of visiting Ikea to try it out in their expansive stores, viewing it online via their website, or using their paper catalog. But whichever route you take, you still need to measure up the room you want to furnish to ensure whatever you buy and build fits.
Ikea has decided to try and remove the pain out of checking whether a product fits by launching an augmented reality app. It's simply called the Ikea Catalog and should be available to download via the App Store or Google Play today (links to both below).
The mobile catalogue works by allowing you to see Ikea products in the room of your choice using the camera and display on your iOS or Android mobile device. How does it get the sizes right? Well, as well as the app you're also going to need Ikea's 2014 paper catalog. You then place that on the floor of the room and the app uses it to gauge the size of the room. It can then display 3D models of products at the correct scale.
To begin with only 90 products will be available to view through the app, but that's sure to expand if it proves popular. And there's a second reason to pick up the paper version of the 2014 catalog–it contains 50 pages you can scan to bring up additional info on your mobile device about certain products.
To try out the app for yourself visit either Googe Play or the App Store.
